It's All Swing!

Boston Lindy Hop & Swing Dance Instruction

Is your studio air conditioned?

Yes!

What do you teach in the beginner classes?

We offer two classes for beginners:
  • Introduction to Lindy Hop: 6-Count Vocabulary
  • Introduction to Lindy Hop: 8-Count Vocabulary
These month long classes are offered on a rotating basis and can be taken in any order. In these two classes, beginning dancers will learn all of the basic patterns and techniques of Lindy Hop needed to progress to the intermediate classes. No experience is necessary for either class. However, many students take both beginner classes more than once before moving on to the intermediate classes.

What other classes do you offer?

We offer six Intermediate-level classes:
  • Lindy Hop Moves: Swing-Out and Styling Variations
  • Mixing 6-Count and 8-Count Lindy Hop
  • Lindy Hop Moves: Turns and Spins
  • Charleston: Face to Face and Variations
  • Charleston: Tandem and Variations
  • Introduction to Fast Lindy Hop
This group of intermediate classes has been carefully designed to give our students the full set of skills that will make social dancing fun and easy! We offer a different Intermediate class each month.

We offer different Specialty Class or Advanced Class each month. Some of these include: Advanced Routine, Balboa, Blues, Musicality, Advanced Fast Lindy Hop. In July and August, we run our A la Carte Sampler Series, with a different Specialty Class each week so students can pick and choose which classes they would like to take.

Can I retake a class?

Yes! We are committed to helping our students grow and learn as dancers. The diversity of our teaching staff ensures that you will always learn something new, whether you are taking a class for the first or the fifteenth time! If you have taken both of our Introduction to Lindy Hop Classes (6-Count and 8-Count Vocabulary), you can retake them free of charge if you are enrolled in one of our Intermediate Classes at the same time. Leaders planning to retake the Introduction to Lindy Hop Class as followers (and vice versa) will need to pay full price.

What if I have to miss a class in the series?

If you know when you register for classes that you will not be able to make it to some classes during the month, then you can pay for only the weeks that you are able to come. If you've signed up and committed to the full session and then miss a class, refunds will not be issued.

Can I pay by credit card?

Sorry, we accept cash and check only.

Does It's All Swing! ever cancel dance classes due to inclement weather?

Unless the power at the VFW is out, or the state has closed down the roads, we always have class. Rain, snow, sleet, hail and all that... we haven't canceled yet! Refunds will not be issued if you miss class due to inclement weather.

What should I wear to class?

You want to be comfortable and able to move in your clothes, and you'll want to dress in layers because you'll get warm. Your shoes should be comfortable and have little to no traction. In other words, our students dress in jeans and t-shirts rather than suits, and sneakers or smooth-soled dress shoes rather than hiking boots. If you decide you want to invest in a pair of dance shoes once you've been dancing for a little while, check out our links page for dancestore.com.

I've taken some swing dancing before. Should I sign up for the beginner or intermediate level class?

If you are comfortable with 6-count Swing (sometimes called East Coast Swing or Jitterbug) and feel very comfortable dancing the swing out, lindy circle, and a swing out from closed position, then you can probably jump in and try the intermediate class.

If any (or all) of that sounds like Greek to you, or you've never danced a step in your life, check out the beginner class, or ask one of our instructors for advice on which class to take. You can always switch classes if you find that you need a refresher or you find that the material covered is something you are already proficient in.

What is a "Specialty" class, and how do I know if I should take it?

Every month It's All Swing! offers three classes: a beginner level Lindy Hop class, an intermediate level Lindy Hop class, and a specialty class. While the first two hours of classes each week are Lindy Hop classes that focus primarily on the moves, techniques, and skills that will get you out on the floor Lindy Hopping and keep you going and growing, the third hour of class every Wednesday is what we call our Specialty Class. It can be anything that we want to teach, or anything that you want to learn, so be sure to make a suggestion.

Often we will delve into areas of Lindy Hop that we don't normally cover in the regular classes and sometimes we'll get into different dances altogether, like 20s Charleston, Balboa or Blues.

Depending on the material, some Specialty Classes can be perfect for beginners while others require more experience. If there are any specific prerequisites for a class, they are normally included in the description for that class on that month's flier. Please feel free to ask our instructors if you have any questions about taking the specialty class, and don't be afraid to push yourself and try it out!

What is a follower? What is a leader? Which one should I choose?

In partner dance, there are two roles, leader and follower. Traditionally, men dance the lead role and women dance the follow role, but many dancers learn the non-traditional role as well. If you are new to swing dancing, you should pick one role for your first class series and stick with it to avoid confusion as you learn the basics.

Do I need to have a partner to take a dance class at It's All Swing?

No. Partners are not required for classes at It's All Swing! We rotate partners throughout the class so everyone has a chance to dance with everyone else.

If I already have a partner, do I need to rotate partners in class?

No. There is no requirement that you rotate partners in class. The class can just skip over you in the rotation. However, we strongly suggest that you consider rotating in class. Our years of experience teaching dance classes and participating in dance classes ourselves have demonstrated that, overwhelmingly, people who rotate in class progress faster than those who do not. If a couple falls significantly behind the pace of the rest of a class, it becomes harder to keep them up to speed without slowing the progress of the rest of the class.

People learn at different speeds and usually one person in a couple will pick up material faster than the other. This usually results in one half of the couple helping (read: teaching) the other with material that they, themselves, are still trying to learn. This can create a lot of stress in the couple's dynamic and will inhibit learning. Rotating allows people to find others in the class who are at their learning speed. This has the dual benefit of first, letting them know that there are others in the class who also may not be picking up the material right away and second, it lets each person dance with other people who are learning at his or her speed. Both members of the couple can then progress at a level that is comfortable for them, and still get to dance with each other when they meet in the rotation.

So please consider rotating. If you still prefer not to rotate, that's totally fine. We want you to come and be comfortable in class, but please keep these observations in mind should you feel the urge to help your partner.

I know how to dance, but my partner doesn't. Can I help him or her learn faster?

Absolutely! The best thing you can do for your partner is to get him or her out social dancing and encourage him or her to dance with lots of different people. When it comes to actually teaching the to dance, let us be the bad guys. It's what you are paying us for, after all. We want dancing to be fun for you and your partner, so if you see something that needs fixing, let us take care of it. Let any anxiety and discomfort with learning be directed at us, rather than at you. You be good cop. Be encouraging, positive, and drag your girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/friend out dancing. We'll be bad cop and make sure your partner is getting it right.
